The 2002 Fall Racing Season

The 2002 Fall racing season officially kicked off in Putney, VT, at the Green Mountain Head. A race for doubles and singles only, this was a great deal of fun for all competitors. I raced in the open single and in the open double, with Eugene, who also raced in the single.

The problem here is that to make it there on time, we had to get up at 6am. Eugene is looking a little bleary-eyed. Upon arrival, we discover that the parking lot is, as advertised, a bona-fide recently harvested corn field.
I couldn't resist the urge to pose. Our boats arrived on this lovely trailer.
Jeff Schafer drove the trailer Sean Wolf and Tom Keister must be talking smack.
Rob White is perched on top of the trailer Rob and Sarah Howlett rig their boat for the mixed double.
One of the early master's events is starting And we only just brought our oars here. These old people are nuts.
Eugene in his trailer monkey phase. Rob launches for his race.
Kevin McDonnell (our coach)munches after the race. He's faster than us in a single, too. Eugene and I pose in what has become our traditional racing uniforms.
The results of the singles race Whoa, we like took third in the double.
As the third-place finishers, we get a bag of apples, instead of a medal. Liane Malcos and Bryna McConnarty finished second in the open women's double. They collected apple cider.
The Riverside mixed doubles really cleaned up, though. Kent and Amy Smack won, receiving jugs of maple syrup for their efforts. Rob and Sarah finished third, and Dave Gabel and Cindy Bishop came in second. I also won this lovely sunburn.

I've been pretty lazy about adding captions to my pictures from the Head of the Connecticut and Head of the Charles, and there a lot of them, so I made separate index pages for both. At some point, some of those images will be on this page with captions, or, if I feel really ambitious, I will put captions on all of them.

The fall 2002 racing season concluded at the Head of the Fish. Obviosuly my oars just could not handle my awesome power. What really happened was the following bizzare sequence during our last race of the day, in the quad: my startboard topnut popped off. Then my oarlock popped off. I pulled my oars in, just so that I wouldn't get in anyone's way. As I was doing that, I was still calling out steering commands. An 8 warming up wondered onto the course. I tried to get us out of it's way. My port oar got caught in the water, and snapped like a little twig. Final tally: Head of the Fish 1--Igor's oar-two halves.

Here's a summary of my fall racing season. I am pretty happy with my results. Especially with the Head of the Charles. (Lineups in team boats listed from stroke to bow.) Late addition--Speed Order. Not so happy with that one. I guess all this racing may have burned me out a little. Or maybe I just didn't have the sense of urgency I needed to have. I guess I'll be learning from this one for a while. For now, here's a little something to commemorate the speed orders by:
